A Benchmarking System for Domestic Water Use

چکیده

The national demand for water in the UK is predicted to increase, exacerbated by a growing UK population, and home-grown demands for energy and food. When set against the context of overstretched existing supply sources vulnerable to droughts, particularly in increasingly dense city centres, the delicate balance of matching minimal demands with resource secure supplies becomes critical. When making changes to “internal” demands the role of technological efficiency and user behaviour cannot be ignored, yet existing benchmarking systems traditionally do not consider the latter. This paper investigates the practicalities of adopting a domestic benchmarking system (using a band rating) that allows individual users to assess their current water use performance against what is possible. The benchmarking system allows users to achieve higher benchmarks through any approach that reduces water consumption. The sensitivity of water use benchmarks are investigated by making changes to user behaviour and technology. The impact of adopting localised supplies (i.e., Rainwater harvesting—RWH and Grey water—GW) and including “external” gardening demands are investigated. This includes the impacts (in isolation and combination) of the following: occupancy rates (1 to 4); roof size (12.5 m 2 to 100 m 2 ); garden size (25 m 2 to 100 m 2 ) and geographical location (North West, Midlands and South East, UK) with yearly temporal effects (i.e., rainfall and temperature). Lessons learnt from analysis of the proposed benchmarking system are made throughout this paper, in particular its compatibility with the existing Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH) accreditation system. Conclusions are subsequently drawn for the robustness of the proposed system.

Analysis of adaptation determinants of domestic rainwater harvesting systems (DRWHs) in Golestan Province, Iran

Most residences of the northern parts of Golestan Province, have historically used rooftop rainwater for drinking. Its adoption rate and continued use have declined in recent years for various reasons. Based on a survey of 380 cases, this research attempted to identify what factors are contributing to the adoption of these systems. The results demonstrated that the adoption changes in response ...

Development of a Multipurpose Water Reuse and Power Production System

In today’s world renewable energy is highly demanding because of increasing oil and fuelprices, desire and necessity to avert irreversible climate damage and also the unreliability of the non -renewablesources. In renewable energy, water is an important source. Previously water is used only for survivalof human being as much as food but no attentionhas been givenen to economical use and conserv...

Investigating the effect of BIODROF systems based on algae-bacterial biofilm for removing COD and TOC from domestic wastewater

Along with the development of urbanization over the past century, water consumption in urban areas rose sharply. Produce large amounts of waste in cities around the world on the one hand, and restricted access to freshwater resources, on the other, increase the requirement to regard for recycling of domestic wastewater. Especially in the Middle East region, that has an arid and semiarid climate...

Investigating the effect of Biodrof systems based on algae-bacterial biofilm for removing total Nitrogen, Phosphorus from domestic wastewater

Due to an increase of the human population on Earth, log of pollutants to water resources has increased and this caused the more restriction of water resources for human. Limited availability of fresh water resources, especially in the Middle East that have arid and semi-arid climate increases the importance of water recycling. The main problem in many conventional wastewater treatment systems ...

Optimization of the PCM-integrated solar domestic hot water system under different thermal stratification conditions

Many researchers have investigated how to increase the overall efficiency of solar-driven thermal systems. Several key parameters, such as collector efficiency and storage tank characteristics, may impose some constraints on the annual solar fraction (ASF) of such systems. In this paper, the behaviour of integrating the phase change material (PCM) in SDHW systems is modelled and optimized n...
